Hufflepuffs are essentially trained to be spies.
Their dorms are underground, and close to the kitchens. It’s also the only dorm that has a defence system that repels any ‘would-be intruders’. Not only does that sound like strategic planning, but it means that Hufflepuffs might be hiding something.
They also seem to have a knack for Herbology, encouraged by Professor Sprout who brings specimens into the common room. Not to mention the fact that Newt Scamander, the definitive expert on all magical creatures came from this house, which means that they not only know their way around plants, but probably magical creatures too.
And what’s close to Hogwarts? The Forbidden Forrest. That means if they have to, they could probably survive in there.
Hufflepuffs are the least likely to boast. While this might be students’ dispositions in general, it also makes them suitable to be recruited as spies. Their house’s reputation helps with this - after all, no one would ever suspect a Hufflepuff of duplicity. The house has also produced the lowest number of dark witches and wizards.
Also of note is the fact that no one knows how Helga Hufflepuff really died - or if she is dead - which means she could have possibly been a spy. Given her penchant for food-charms, it would be quite easy for her to poison someone. This could be what Hufflepuff’s cup was used for.
(It’s also interesting that it’s never been revealed how the Fat Friar died, not to mention what would make him want to stay behind as a ghost. Perhaps he’s hiding something.)
Helga Hufflepuff was also the one who brought house-elves to work in the kitchens to prevent them being abused and mistreated. That means that the elves are probably Hufflepuff allies.
She was also the founder that took in all the students that weren’t placed in the other houses. Of course if history and literature have thought us anything, rag-tag misfits are often the triumphant ones. Not to mention the fact that it’s a house mostly full of loyal, fair and hardworking students. That means if they set their mind to something, they can probably do it.
Lastly, as house prefect Gabriel Truman states on Pottermore:
"Hufflepuffs are trustworthy and loyal. We don’t shoot our mouths off, but cross us at your peril; like our emblem, the badger, we will protect ourselves, our friends and our families against all-comers. Nobody intimidates us."
So if you weren’t already a little scared of Hufflepuffs. You should be.
